RARE ILLUSTRATED BOOK ON THE NAZI THEORY OF RACE AND HEREDITY

This illustrated Nazi book is a manual for teachers on the theory of heredity and evolution, racial hygiene and ethnology. Vererbung und Rasse (Heredity and Race) was written by Dr. Werner Dittrich and published in 1936 by a Stuttgart publishing company called Der praktische Schulmann (The Practical School Teacher).

Dr. Werner Dittrich was a teacher and an important theorist on race during the Third Reich. A year after he wrote this book, he organized an exhibition called “Leading Thoughts on Race in School”. He rose to leadership level in the race department of the Hauptamt für Erzieher (Main Office of Education) in Bayreuth and the National Socialist Teachers League. He published a magazine called Der Biologe (The Biologist) which in 1939 was acquired by Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler’s SS-Ahnenerbe!

In his foreword the author writes that in the Third Reich teachers of heredity and race theory have become more than just teachers of that subject. The subject has become an important part of the National Socialist philosophy. Therefor, teachers have become political soldiers of the Third Reich with the important task of creating the next generation of National Socialist citizens. He felt Rassenpolitisches Unterricht or education on racial politics should be considered a fundamental piece of the education of schoolchildren in Nazi Germany and this book was written to help teachers make the subject interesting to teach and for students to learn.

There are maps, tables and charts as well as pictures of the faces of different races, such as white Europeans, mongoloid (yellow), negroes (black), aboriginal Australian, and Jews.

This is a very nice 88 year old example of Vererbung und Rasse in little used condition, with the name of a previous teacher/owner and the date 1944 written on the title page. Tight spine, no odor.

The rare 6-¾ x 9-½ inch, 84-page illustrated softcover book published in 1936 contains new, in-depth information on subjects such as hereditary science, racial hygiene, blood lines, plant and animal propagation, the effect of mixing of the blood, an illustrated overview of different races, the importance of family, the characteristics of race, art and race, the Jewish race and their characteristics, the Nordic race, etc. All of which was approved by the NS-Lehrerbund (NSLB or National Socialist Teachers League).
