Generalfeldmarschall von Weichs, Luftwaffe General Hugo Sperrle
nazi field marshal letter 1943
der Chef der Luftflotte 3 und Befehlshaber West
Nazi Field Marshal Sperrle signed letter
Generalfeldmarschall Hugo Sperrle
Maximilian Maria Joseph Karl Gabriel Lamoral Reichsfreiherr von und zu Weichs an der Glon
Generalfeldmarschall Maximilian von Weichs
On 1 February 1943 Weichs was promoted to Generalfeldmarschall. From the informal Lieber Weichs! salutation to the “comradely greetings” at the end of this letter, it is obvious that Field Marshals Sperrle and Weichs were on very friendly terms. The 8-1/8 x 11-3/8 inch letter was hand-signed by Sperrle in black ink below the words Heil dem Führer (Hail to the Führer).
When Generalfeldmarschall Hugo Sperrle wrote this letter, he was the head of Luftflotte 3 and Luftwaffe Commander of the West. The World War I veteran worked for Hermann Göring’s Air Ministry until he was given the command of the Condor Legion in Spain in 1936 and 1937. Sperrle was active during the Anschluss and Czech incorporation into Hitler’s Greater Germany and played a crucial role during the Wehrmacht invasion of Poland, and in the West and later he directed Luftwaffe operations during the aerial Battle of Britain, the Blitz.

Maximilian Maria Joseph Karl Gabriel Lamoral Reichsfreiherr von und zu Weichs an der Glon (a baron, with one of the longest names in history) also started his military career during World War I. Between WW1 and WW2 he rose through the German army ranks and by 1939 he headed his own Army Corps (Armeegruppe von Weichs). After the Polish surrender he was promoted to Commander-in-Chief of the 2nd Army which took part in the Wehrmacht invasion of the West, the Balkans Campaign and the invasion of the Soviet Union.

This is a very rare, very historic Third Reich letter sent by Luftwaffe General Hugo Sperrle, congratulating famous Nazi Army Commander Maximilian von Weichs on his promotion to Field Marshal on 1 February 1943. It is an absolutely original World War II German letter from one Knight’s Cross recipient to another!
