NAZI EAGLE AND SWASTIKA - 5 FT WINGSPAN
Nazi eagle and swastika
Nazi eagle
Nazi swastika
Nazi era Strassenschmuck
Moritz Hertwig of Tannenberg
RZM number M 3/96

AN OUTSTANDING
EXAMPLE OF NAZI
STRASSENSCHMUCK OR STREET DECOR -
A HUGE NAZI EAGLE
WITH A 5 FOOT
WINGSPAN

This is a very unusual relic of the Third Reich of Adolf Hitler, and maybe the last example of its type in existence. We bought this eagle years ago in the basement of a small, ordinary looking house in a town of less than 250 people southeast of Nürnberg. It might have been used (or intended for use) at the Reichsparteitaggelände (Nazi Party Days Grounds) in Nürnberg.

This eagle and swastika is what the Nazis called Strassenschmuck or street decorations. The body and the wings are made in extremely realistic deep-relief of some sort of composition material like paper maché, pressed in a mold and painted silver. Those three pieces are bolted together with a very heavy rectangular composition board center piece. Thus completed, the eagle can be hung from a hole in the center piece or screw or bolted through holes in the wings to a wall or battenboard of some kind.

This eagle is huge. The body measures 25-1/2 inches (64 cm) from the top of the head to the bottom of the wreath containing the swastika. Each of the wings measures about 12-1/2 x 27 inches (31 x 69 cm) and when assembled the wingspan is over 58 inches (just under 150 cm). The 3-dimensional detail in these pieces is fantastic!
This Nazi eagle and swastika was made by a company called Moritz Hertwig of Tannenberg, Germany according to the RZM Erlaubnis or permit information stamped on the backs of both of the wings and the centerpiece. That RZM Erlaubnis shows RZM number M 3/96 in the category Herstellung v. Symbolen (Manufacture of Emblems), and in Clyde Davis’ wonderful book on RZM numbers that number was assigned to Moritz Hertwig.
While it would look great in any collection, or on the wall of a good museum, its first, best use would be as a master which could be scanned on modern computer equipment so that other identical examples could be made in any size for all who wish to buy one. There would be a ready market for replicas made from this original Third Reich example. Excellent condition.
This rare piece of Third Reich street décor is **SOLD**.
We are happy to ship abroad at additional cost. Please inquire.

We bought the eagle assembled in Germany but had to disassemble it to bring it to the United States years ago. We have just reassembled it for the first time in order to make the photographs for this web page. It is magnificent!
The picture on the left will give you a better idea of just how big this Third Reich piece of Festschmuck really is.
