USM book # 286
|
This is a very nice example of a fundamental German book from Nazi times - Deutsche Heldensagen (German Hero Stories) as related by Hans Friedrich Blunck, but much more importantly as illustrated by superb Third Reich illustrator Arthur Kampf.
The big 6-1/2 x 9 inch, 430 page, hard cover book was published by Theodor Knaur of Berlin in 1938 and contains 80 fantastic Kampf illustrations.
The book retells all the medieval sagas of German history from the perspective of a modern man telling them to Hitler Youth age boys. The stories include those of Jung Siegfried, Beowulf, Wieland, König Rother, Walther und Hildegund, Das Nibelungenlied, Dietrich von Bern, Iring und Irminfried, Herzog Ernst, Roland, König Hagen, Die Gudrunsage, Tannhäuser, Parzival, and others.
The book is in nice used condition and actually comes with the original front panel of the dust jacket. The dust jacket seen in our photos above is a modern reprint from an original in our archive.
