This is a fine, complete example of the Nazi art magazine Die Kunst im deutschen Reich ("The Arts in the German Reich"), the MAY 1940 Ausgabe A issue as produced by the Zentralverlag der NSDAP, the Central Publishing House of the Nazi Party, Franz Eher of Munich.
The magazine was large in size (11 x 14 inch), huge is scope and right to the end (Fall 1944) it was published at the direction of Chancellor Adolf Hitler himself by Zentralverlag der NSDAP, Franz Eher Nachfolger on fine quality paper using the best available inks. It was under the supervision of an extremely prestigious group of directors that included Reichsminister Professor Albert Speer of Berlin, Professor Richard Klein of the Academy of Applied Arts in München and Professor Leonhard Gall of Studio Troost in Munich.
This 44-page issue has an extensive feature article on sculptures of war heroes from the exhibition in the National Gallery titled "1813-1815 Greater Germany's Battle for Freedom". There are statues by Christian Rauch of Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III, Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, Graf Neidhart von Gneisenau, Gerhard von Scharnhorst, Johann Graf Yorck von Wartenburg, Friedrich Graf Kleist von Nollendorf, Graf von Radetzky and others. The bust of Karl Philipp Furst von Schwarzenberg shown below is by Franz Klein.
Huge full-page, full-color and black & white photographs dominated the format of Die Kunst im Deutschen Reich. Many of the pictures were never published elsewhere and none were published in a larger format.
Die Kunst im deutschen Reich Mai 1940, Ausgabe A (4. Jahrgang, Folge 5) is complete and in very good used condition, with a taped spine. Some discoloration to the covers, but the content is in very nice condition. No writing, no odor.
Another heavily illustrated article features pen and ink drawings by Arthur Kampf (like the one shown above) and there are several paintings by Caspar David Friedrich, printed in both color (left) and black & white.
The 12 pages of advertising in the back include an ad for the Albert Speer book "The New Reichschancellery" (also published by Zentralverlag der NSDAP) as well as ads by Rosenthal Porzellan, Indanthren (IG Farben), Junkers and art dealers and construction companies.
