The subtitle of Schwert am Himmel (Sword in the Sky) is "Five Years of the German Air Force" and celebrating those five years is the purpose of this book. Written by Dr. Heinz Orlovius of the Reichsluftfahrtministerium and printed by Adler-Bücherei of Berlin in 1940, this wonderful Nazi photo book shows off all the improvements in the Nazi German Air Force since its official creation in 1935.
In this heavily illustrated 6-¼ x 8-¾ inch, 264 page softcover book the Luftwaffe, the most modern air force in the world, shows its airplanes, its well-trained pilots, and the invaluable support they had provided for Nazi Army soldiers during the Wehrmacht invasion of Poland in 1939 and western European countries in the spring of 1940.
Chapters in this book cover the Luftwaffe during the period 1918 - 1933, Hermann Göring, the Legion Condor, the Luftwaffe during the invasion of Poland and western Europe, Airplanes of the Luftwaffe, Flak, the High Command of the Luftwaffe, Fighting the British from the Sky, Luftwaffe Engineers and Technical Personnel, the Luftwaffe in Movies, the NSFK, Young Candidates for the Luftwaffe (vom Pimpf zum
Flieger), Luftwaffe Air Raid Protection and more.
There is also a chapter about Manfred von Richthofen in World War I, Luftwaffe sport events, Luftwaffe technical training and research facilities, architectural details of new Luftwaffe facilities, Nazi nose art as well as maps of Poland and France show where the Luftwaffe was active in 1939 and 1940. There are photos of the Luftwaffe as part of the Legion Condor in Spain as well as during the Anschluss of Austria with Nazi Germany.
There is additional information about uniforms and badges of the Luftwaffe, a historical timeline of the Luftwaffe and great photo portraits of members of the Luftwaffe High Command: Generalfeldmarschall Goering, Generaloberst Milch, Generalmajor Jeschonnek, Generalleutnant Udet, Generalleutnant Bodenschatz, General der Flieger Kesselring, General der Flieger Sperrle, and others.
The last few pages contain advertising by Nazi airplane manufacturers such as Junkers Flugzeug- und Motorenwerke AG Dessau, Henschel Flugzeug-Werke, as well as ads by manufacturers of Luftwaffe airplane parts.
Schwert am Himmel contains photos and in-depth information not found in other Third Reich war-time aviation books. This 80+ year old example is complete and in nice used condition, no odor.
