Luftwaffe über dem Feind, Generalmajor der Luftwaffe Elard Baron von Löwenstern
Luftwaffe über dem Feind was written by Generalmajor der Luftwaffe Elard (Baron) von Löwenstern. The author was a World War I veteran and after 1933 worked at the Berlin Reichsluftfahrtministerium of Hermann Goering, involved in the build-up of the Luftwaffe. During the 1930s he was promoted and had several different functions in the General Staff of the Nazi Air Force. He was the Commander of several Nazi airbases in 1939 and 1940 and served in several staff positions until retirement on 31 March 1945.

Von Löwenstern became a Soviet POW in May of 1945 and died on 21 December 1945 at Speziallager 3 Hohenschönhausen. This was a special transit camp set up by the Soviet Occupying Forces (NKWD) in a former kitchen building of the NSV on Genslerstrasse 66 in Berlin, for members of the Nazi Party, police and Gestapo as well as administrative personnel of the NSDAP. Catastrophic hygienic circumstances caused the death of more than 1000 people, and 59 year old Von Löwenstern was one of them.
