When we acquired this folio in Vienna about 15 years ago it came with a 8-1/8 x 10-1/2 inch genuine photograph featuring the cathedral of Linz in it, produced by a photo studio in Vienna in 1914 (shown below). The folio published by Verlag Fidelis Steuer of Linz is not dated, but we think it dates to approximately the same period as the photo.
Bilder aus Alt-Linz is complete with all ten prints and its printed introduction.
The folio shows normal wear for an approximately 110 year old piece of ephemera. It protected the art prints very well as they are in wonderful condition without any fading. No writing, no tape, no odor.
The Nazis spent heavily on Linz, establishing the industrial Hermann Göring Works on the east side, and redeveloping the center which was to become a great art repository for all of Germany.
Bilder aus Alt-Linz is a 9-¼ x 11-½ inch green cardstock art folio with ten pen and ink illustrations by well-known painter Franz Ludwig. The illustrations were made about the time when Adolf Hitler lived in Linz.
Art historian Dr. Oskar Oberwalder wrote the 4-page introduction about the history of Linz (part of it is shown below) and description of the ten beautiful 9 x 11-3/8 inch illustrations of the old city, City Hall, Franz Josefplatz, Hofberg and several picturesque courtyards.
Few cities in Austria more heartily embraced Nazism than Linz did. Adolf Hitler’s childhood home was just outside the city boundary and he had lived in Linz with his mother as a teenager, before he moved to Wien (Vienna) in 1907.
In April 1938 the city welcomed the German Army and the German Administration of many of the country’s institutions. There was already an active SS and Nazi Party and Linz became the most important city of Reichsgau Oberdonau.
