This is a very nice, original, never-messed with M1871 German Infantry dress bayonet by famous maker Carl Kaiser of Solingen. As you can see in our pictures, the beautiful nick-free blade is fully etched on both sides as well-as along the top of the blade. That etching includes the Kaiser's Imperial German eagle under a crown in an oval, floral motif. The eagle has a shield on its chest with an image of another eagle and below that shield an Iron Cross. Also etched on the 19-1/4 inch blade are numerous floral motifs, a lion, a man blowing a horn, a nude woman, a drum, crossed swords, etc. The blade is well stamped with the crossed saber logo of C K Co.
This rare bayonet never had a slot in the top of the handle for the bayonet lug on a rifle, but was designed as a dress bayonet only to be hung on a belt with a parade uniform. There is however, a hole for the muzzle of a rifle as on a regular bayonet. Even the diagonal lines on the hand grip are present on one side of the handle only.
GERMAN M 1871 INFANTRY DRESS BAYONET AND SCABBARD
CARL KAISER OF SOLINGEN
This bayonet has a very nice original brass mounted, black leather scabbard, 20-1/4 inch long. The stitching on the back side of the scabbard is still in excellent condition. There are two small dents in the upper scabbard mounting and a few even smaller dents in the tip. We would call it very nice used condition for a German bayonet about 135 years old. We even think the red felt washer is original to this bayonet.
