Die Pause magazine was by far the largest and most prestigious photo feature magazine published in Greater Germany’s second largest city, Wien (Vienna), by Vienna’s Vice-Mayor Ing. Hanns Blaschke. Blaschke was an early member of the Austrian Nazi Party (when it was still illegal) and was a member of the SS. With the Anschluss, in September 1938 he became the head of the newly created Kulturamt der Stadt Wien (Culture Office of the City of Vienna) and on 30 December 1943 Reichsstatthalter Baldur von Schirach named him Mayor of Vienna.
A second large and timely article is titled “The Road to the Third Reich” which highlights the history and beauty of Greater Germany, and Austria’s cultural contributions to it.
Another heavily illustrated chapter is about the German Youth and shows HJ boys and BdM girls in various situations. “Adolf Hitler’s Roads” highlights the Reichsautobahn which is called the “Artery of the German Nation and Witness of its Culture”.
The rare magazine we offer for sale on this USMBOOKS web page is year 3 (1938), issue 6 of the 8 x 10-¾ inch, heavily illustrated 74 page heavily illustrated Nazi cultural photo magazine, Die Pause.
Earlier Die Pause magazines and those published after 1940 tend to be long on old fashioned culture and short on the news of Austria as part of Nazi Germany. This magazine is just the opposite - long on news of Austria as part of Germany and short on cultural news.
After a patriotic, pro-Nazi foreword by Hanns Blaschke (shown above), the lead article is this issue features very heavy photo coverage of the historic spring 1938 plebiscite and reunification of Austria with Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany. There are excerpts of speeches by Hitler, Gauleiter Josef Burckel and heavy photo coverage of the ceremonial events.
Many of the pictures are unique to this publication and are not found elsewhere. They include Hitler on the steps of the Vienna City Hall, Hitler greeting early Austrian Nazis and with citizens of Tyrol, Hitler in the city of Graz with Heinrich Himmler, Dr. Arthur Seyss-Inquart, Gauleiter Burckel, Wehrmacht soldiers in Vienna, etc., etc.
This fine issue of Die Pause also contains advertising for the best firms and products made and sold in Vienna. Advertisers include beer breweries, fashion and furniture shops, bars and cafes, industrial enterprises, insurance companies, etc. Several advertisements feature Nazi swastika and/or swastika flags.
This rare 86+ year old issue of Die Pause is in very good used condition with some minor top-right edge wear. It is complete, has no writing and no odor.
This fine original 1938 Die Pause magazine is
