The heavily illustrated monthly magazine Die Mappe (The Portfolio) was published during the Third Reich by Georg D. W. Callwey in München (Munich), one of Nazi Germany’s leading publishers in topics such as architecture, construction, planning and design, renovation and restoration.
Die Mappe was subscribed to by professionals in the painting, design and decorating fields and contained articles and advertising of interest to those who applied graphics to the interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, stages, signs, automobiles, etc.
This book contains articles on schools, Hitler Youth Homes and Nazi Party educational facilities, architecture styles of churches in Germany, decorative furniture styles, modern German house styles, Roman amphitheaters and modern stadiums, effective logos for different professions, decorating children’s rooms, modern factory and industrial buildings, Wandmalerei or murals in the Olympic Village in Berlin, the sgraffito painting technique, etc.
This 8-1/2 x 11-½ inch green linen hardcover book with gold blocking on the front cover and spine contains all twelve well-illustrated issues of Die Mappe published in Jahrgang 1936/1937, April 1936 thru March 1937. It has 268 heavily illustrated pages and is fully indexed by article and by people who contributed to the content. Guido Hengst was the editor and wrote several articles as well.
This rare bound Third Reich example of Die Mappe also has advertising for new technical books, paint and stencil producers, the Nazi charity WHW, wallpaper and paint brush manufacturers, painting and decorating schools, etc.
These 84 year old hardbound examples of Die Mappe magazine are in very good condition. They are complete, and have no writing or offensive odor.
These Die Mappe magazines are illustrated with architectural drawings, layout examples, interior and exterior design examples, sgraffito painting, as well as many photos of finished work in modern construction, stadiums in Berlin and Nuremburg, marquetry, etc. There are many examples of hand painted murals in and on homes, factories, schools, beer breweries and other businesses, even a mural of all the words to the Nazi ‘anthem’ Die Fahne hoch! by Horst Wessel (shown right) and the Hitler Youth Home in Quedlinburg featuring Heinrich I (shown at the top of this USMBOOKS web page).
