Deutschland und Amerika - Germany and U.S.A. The Steuben Memorial is a fine hardcover book published in German and English for the Deutschen Steuben-Gesellschaft E.V. in Potsdam in 1932. The book was assembled by Kurt Schomburg and highlights the many similarities and shared values between Germany and the US, and necessary cooperation between the two countries in the early 1930s.
Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben was a Prussian military officer who joined the American Revolutionary War through mutual French contacts with American diplomats, most notably U.S. Ambassador to France, Benjamin Franklin. General George Washington appointed him as temporary Inspector General of the Continental Army. Steuben took the lead in teaching soldiers the essentials of military drills, tactics, and discipline based on Prussian techniques and wrote Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States. He also addressed widespread administrative waste and graft, helping save desperately needed supplies and funds. In 1778, on Washington's recommendation, Congress commissioned Steuben as Inspector General with the rank of Major General. He served the remainder of the war as Washington's Chief of Staff and one of his most trusted advisors. After the war, Steuben was made a U.S. citizen and granted a large estate near Rome, NY in reward for his service. He died there on 28 November 1794.
Steuben celebrations in Tirol and Bad Mergentheim in the presence of the President of the American Steuben Society are covered, the effect of German paintings in America, the cultural importance of aviation, and a woman named Ilse Schreiber wrote a chapter about her drive across Californian Oil Country to the Mojave Desert (which include her pictures of Yosemite, Hollywood, and San Juan di Capistrano).
Ferdinand Hansen, a Pioneer of German-American Friendship is the subject of another chapter, and the purpose of the German Steuben Society is also explained.
Von Steuben was one of four European military leaders who assisted the American cause during the Revolution and was honored with a statue in Lafayette Square, just north of the White House in Washington, DC and there is a statue of Baron von Steuben at Valley Forge National Historical Park in Pennsylvania as well. The Steuben Society was founded in 1919 as "an educational, fraternal, and patriotic organization of American citizens of German background”.
Other chapters cover Prussian Militarism, the Prussian Idea of States in its Consequences for Racial and Social Biology, Franz Ritter von Epp wrote a chapter titled “The German Military Situation and the Education of the People” about the destiny of the German nation (accompanied by a photo of Adolf Hitler with Generalleutnant Ritter von Epp). Franz Seldte, the founder of the Nazi Stahlhelm Association of Frontline Soldiers, wrote a chapter about the will and need for national and social unity in Germany, and German historian Dr. h.c. Alfred von Wegerer wrote about the “Struggle for the War Guilt Question”. “The Great Right of Self-Determination” is a chapter that deals with National Socialism in Austria, and the political problems in the (formerly German) Rhine and Saar regions are also covered.
“The National Socialist Movement and its Leader” are described by European politicians including British PM Chamberlain, and there is even a chapter by Alfred Rosenberg with the fundamental thoughts of his book “The Myth of the 20th Century”.
