Deutsche Leistung in Amerika, Karl Götz
Deutsche Leistung in Amerika (German Achievements in America) by Karl Götz was published by the Central Publishing House of the Nazi Party Franz Eher Nachfolger of Munich in 1940. It was book number 8 in their Schriftenreihe der NSDAP series in Group III, Volkheit und Glaube (National Identity and Beliefs).

The 120 pages in this 6-1/8 x 9 inch softcover Nazi book have chapters about emigration by Germans from all different backgrounds and communities to the Americas, an estimate of the numbers, where they went to and why, the difficulty of leaving ones homeland, diverse German destiny and achievement in the United States, Germans at work in Canada and in the jungle of Brazil, Germans living in Chile and Argentina and more.

Deutsche Auswanderung
German emigrants in Canada
Unlike most of our inventory of Third Reich books, we purchased this example of Deutsche Leistung in Amerika with many OSS (Office of Strategic Services, the predecessor to the American CIA) related books from an antique dealer in the state of Wyoming several years ago. It is in nice used condition and has the name of John Hawgood written in pencil on the front fly leaf in pencil. We discovered that Hawgood (reference photo below) was a British history professor at the University of Birmingham who specialized in American Western History. In 1957, he taught at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. His book, The American West (published in the United States as America's Western Frontiers), won an Alfred Knopf prize in 1967. In 1970 his book The Tragedy of German America came out, after it was originally published in 1940 (the same year the book we selling here, Deutsche Leistung in Amerika)!

Clearly, this and the other OSS related material we purchased from the antique dealer in Wyoming years ago, got there via the WW2 British spy, John Arkas Hawgood.

The next owner of this Third Reich book might be able to discover additional information about the fascinating British men who have owned this Nazi Party publication during the last 80 years.
Deutschtum im Ausland
We also discovered that at age 34 in 1939, John Hawgood joined the British Armed Forces and was appointed head of the German Section of Foreign Research and Press Service which was Great Britain's primary supplier of intelligence from the German-occupied Baltic states during World War II. After that assignment he worked in the Political Intelligence Department of the British Foreign Office, and finally served in the Political Warfare Executive working closely with the American OSS. Founded in 1941, the PWE was a British clandestine organization created to produce and disseminate propaganda with the aim of damaging enemy morale and sustaining the morale of countries occupied by or allied with Nazi Germany. Few of his friends ever knew of his five years of wartime service as mention of it was prohibited by the British National Secrets Act.
Inside the front cover we found a 4 x 8 inch slip of paper from the "Liaison with Postal & Telegraph Censorship (Room 651)" showing this example of Deutsche Leistung in Amerika had been provided by Lt. Colonel C. Hordern to a Lord Gage.
