This example of Berlin Einst und Jetzt (Berlin Then and Now) has a special dedication page in the front, showing it was given to one of the Gästen or guests who visited Reichshauptstadt Berlin during the XI Olympic Games in 1936.
Many people who visited Berlin before or since World War II will remember the famous Café Kranzler on the Kurfürstendamm (above) - it is pictured in this book in illustrations made over 100 years apart!
Berlin policemen are pictured from 1848 to 1934, the Berlin Feuerwehr from the 1850s to modern firetrucks, public transportation vehicles through the ages (horse drawn carriages to double-decker busses), automobiles, balloons to airplanes on Tempelhof airport, the harbor, and the famous Berlin avenue Unter den Linden from 1770 to the 1930s.
Interesting examples of ‘then & now’ illustrations include the Palais Radziwill that became the Reichschancellery and the Palais des Prinzen Ferdinand that was turned into the Propaganda Ministry. There is also a photo of the Horst Wessel Platz filled with SA men, a model of the Olympic Stadium (shown left) and a double page spread showing the view from the roof of the Haus of the Deutsche Arbeitsfront. The famous Avus is shown below.
The 7 x 9-7/8 inch, 240-page linen hardcover book by Dr. Max Arendt and Dr. Paul Torge covers the history of Berlin from the Middle Ages into the Third Reich of Adolf Hitler on the first 49 pages. This text portion of the book is followed by illustrations and photos printed on fine glossy paper showing ‘then & now’ examples of famous landmarks but also lesser-known streets, bridges, churches and buildings through the ages. Opera square, Potsdamer Platz, the university, Berlin City Hall on the Alexanderplatz.
The Pariser Platz and the Brandenburg Gate are pictured from 1770 to the SA marching through the Brandenburger Tor 160 years later - see pictures above right and below.
This linen hardcover example of Berlin Einst und Jetzt has gold blocking on the cover and spine and was published by Verlag Gustav Grosser. It is a Second Expanded edition in very nice, tight condition, no odor.
