The War in Maps 1939/40, German Library of Information New York 1941
Established in May 1936, the German Library of Information in New York published a lot of English language promotional material about Nazi Germany, meant to familiarize the American public with the Third Reich, its leaders, its politics, culture, art, customs and history. It was funded by the Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda, the Nazi Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda of Dr. Joseph Goebbels in Berlin. Until September 1939, it was considered to be a part of the German Consulate's general office at 17 Battery Place in New York City. On 11 December 1941, the US Congress declared war on Germany just hours after Germany declared war on the United States in the aftermath of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Very quickly, the American Consulate and the German Library of Information in New York were closed for the duration of the war.
The War in Maps is an exceptionally rare 1941 publication by the German Library of Information in New York. This 81 year old English language book rarely comes up for sale and the example we offer on this USMBOOKS web page complete and is in very nice condition. The cover has yellowed with age but the interior pages are in excellent condition.
The foreword by Dr. Matthias Schmitz (the Director of the German Library of Information) explains that this book illustrates the course of World War II from September 1939 to 1940 in detailed, multicolored maps prepared by "expert geopoliticians" and with text that "interprets both the causes and the strategy of the war." The editor, Dr. Giselher Wirsing, is described as one of Germany's most eminent authorities on international affairs. He was also the Editor-in-Chief of the Munich newspaper Münchner Neueste Nachrichten.
The text that accompanies the many multi-color maps explains the causes and the strategy of the war so far and to "solve many problems difficult to understand from official communiques and newspaper dispatches." The main purpose was to show "why a German victory was inevitable from the beginning, and how the Führer created the political bases upon which each of the great military undertakings was completed with precision." The maps show the "revolutionary character of the war" and that "the old world is dying" according to text in the Introduction dated July 1940.
Above and right, Paul Reynaud, the French Minister of Finance on the title page of L'Illustration of 16 March 1940.  The text points out the (politically) incorrect map of Europe on the easel behind Reynaud while talking to President Roosevelt's personal envoy.  A slip of the censor's office!  Close-up of the map shown right.
Above we show the Table of Contents so potential buyers can see exactly which subjects are covered in color maps in this rare 81 year old German Library of Information book. The last twelve pages have the fascinating Final Reports of the High Command of the German Armed Forces (OKW) on the German campaigns in Poland, Norway, Holland, Belgium, Flanders and France.
The original title for this 8-3/8 x 12 inch, 70-page soft cover book was to be Atlas of Victory because it was to "portray the expulsion of Britain from the European continent where it was considered an unwanted intruder."

The War in Maps was printed in the USA. It is very rare and in very good, little used condition. No odor.
