SS RUNES KEY AS PURCHASED IN
GERMANY IN MARCH 2007

This is the real thing, and not some tricked-up junk altered since World War II. It is a genuine 1930s model Remington portable typewriter in its original case which has an original number 3 hammer and key containing a SS runes character in the shift position.

The serial number on the chassis of this American made Remington portable typewriter is NL 36476. The case measures about 4 x 12 x 12-1/2 inches and with the typewriter inside weighs about 12 pounds.

The typewriter works fine in every mode and any key depressed raises the corresponding hammer. The carriage slides easily, moves both left and right when the appropriate key is depressed and there does not seem to be anything broken. The hammers strike the paper nicely.

We bought this SS Schreibmaschine at a flea market in Germany on 18 March 2007 from a vendor who could not even make it work. Because the machine is a portable, a button on the right hand side (indicated in the photo directly above by a yellow arrow) has to be pulled out and then rotated toward the back of the machine to raise the hammers into typing position. If this is not done, depressing a key will not make the hammer strike the paper. The man we bought it from had no understanding of this mechanical feature.

The SS hammer looks exactly like all the other hammers on the typewriter. It does not stand out in any way as being a replacement or an after-market part. The finger key is also not out of the range of colors and styles of the other keys in any way. The keyboard contains all the keys necessary for a German operator to type all characters in the German alphabet plus the SS.

The entire machine appears to be perfectly Third Reich original and in good working order.
