NSDAP Gau Baden was the Nazi administrative district located along the central French border in western Nazi Germany and Robert Wagner was its Gauleiter. In 1940, after Germany occupied the French region of Alsace, Gau Baden incorporated the two Alsatian provinces of Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin, becoming Gau Baden-Elsass. Karlsruhe was the original capital of the Gau, but it was moved to Strasbourg after the German occupation of France.
This 7-1/4 x 9-5/8 inch linen hardcover Second Edition example of Grenzland Baden Spaten zur Hand! starts with full-page portraits of Adolf Hitler, Reichsarbeitsführer Konstantin Hierl, Reichsstatthalter (and Gauleiter) Robert Wagner, Oberstarbeitsführer Helff, followed by photos of Hitler greeting Helff and other RAD dignitaries at the 1935 Nazi Party Days in Nuremberg. Other photos show RAD building projects, local RAD leaders, a RAD uniform and hobnail boots supply room, the inside of RAD barracks showing how RAD men lived and ate, RAD sport events, Gauleiter Robert Wagner visiting RAD projects and barracks, etc.
Grenzland Baden Spaten zur Hand! (Borderland Baden - Shovels in Hand!) is a high-quality 256-page Nazi hardcover photo book about the Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD or Nazi State Labor Service) in Gau Baden written by the Leader of the Nazi Arbeitsgau XXVII, Oberstarbeitsführer Helff. Its early days of organization are covered, its growth in the early 1930s, its leadership on the local level, building projects as well as history, scenery and sights of Gau Baden.
There are many maps, as well as detailed tables covering RAD organization of all RAD departments in Gau Baden and membership numbers, but also patriotic song lyrics and poems, even the program of Sonnenewendfeier 1936 of NSDAP Gau Baden, organized by Reichsarbeitsdienst Arbeitsgau XXVII. Many of the RAD departments were named for famous local Nazi heroes such as Abteitung 4/272 in Freiburg which took the name Albert Leo Schlageter (1894-1923).
This is a very nice First Edition, striking linen hardcover of Grenzland Baden Spaten zur Hand! which we doubt was ever read. The cover is a bit dirty in places but the 242 glossy pages look untouched and the spine is tight. The book printed by Buchdruckerei C.F. Müller of Karlsruhe in 1936 has no unpleasant odor.
This fine 1936 First Edition RAD photo book on Nazi Arbeitsgau 27 Baden
