RAB-Rasthaus Chiemsee
Adolf Hitler visits
By far the biggest and most impressive Raststätte or rest stop built in Germany during the construction of Adolf Hitler's Reichsautobahn was the one on the south shore of the huge Chiemsee or Chiem Lake between Munich and Salzburg. RAB Chiemsee was built along hundreds of yards of the best real estate along the lake facing the new Nazi Reichsautobahn.

Fortunately, after World War II the American Armed Forces took over RAB Chiemsee, its restaurant and hotel, and made it one of the facilities in the American Forces recreation system, or it would have become one of the victims of the all-consuming German mission to remove everything fro the landscape that can be connected to Adolf Hitler. During the American occupation of RAB Chiemsee, almost nothing was changed - the beautiful woodwork and wall paintings, the furniture, the statuary and the facilities themselves remained as if in a 1940 time warp. It was easy to imagine Hitler himself coming up the sidewalk. The facility has been turned back over to the Germans who use it as some sort of a clinic.
The Rest House on Lake Chiemsee was designed by order of Adolf Hitler under the supervision of Dr. Todt, General Inspektor for German Roads. The interior and exterior were designed by Professor Fritz Norkauer. Construction was in the hands of the Supreme Construction Office of the Reichsautobahn in Munich. Construction began on 3 July 1937 and the Rest House was opened on 1 September 1938.
twin-tailed mermaid logo
The item we offer on this USMBOOKS web page is an absolutely authentic 1/2 Cup silver-plated cream pitcher manufactured by Gebrüder Hepp (the Brothers Hepp) of Pforzheim, Germany for the Reichsautobahn Rasthaus restaurant at Chiemsee. The logo rolled on the front of the Kännchen shows a twin-tailed mythical mermaid from the Chiemsee in an oval beneath the letters R•A•B.

RAB Chiemsee Kännchen
The twin-tailed mermaid logo was used on all sorts of decorations, menus, booklets, etc. at Chiemsee and was even found on the original Hitler dedication plaque on the side of the main building during the American occupation. We suspect the plaque disappeared shortly after the Americans returned the historic RAB-Rasthaus Chiemsee property to the Bavarian government in 2004.
This original Third Reich 1/2 T. Gebrüder Hepp pitcher is in very nice original condition. It shows use consistent with a restaurant facility, but not abuse. A rare addition to any collection of Nazi era German silver-plate tableware or Reichsautobahn material.
