This is a fine example of the rare 7 x 10 inch, 240 page very, very heavily illustrated German / English bilingual book Die Waffen SS - Ein Bild Dokumentation (The Waffen-SS - A Photo Study) by Herbert Walther with contributions by Generalfeldmarschall Erich von Manstein, Generalleutnant Hasso von Manteuffel and Heinz Höhne.
The beautifully printed hard cover book (with dust jacket) was published without a date in 1960 by Ahnert Verlag in Eschzell, Germany. It contains a treasure of more than 500 very rare Waffen-SS Kriegsberichter photos taken during World War II, and its publication created a firestorm of criticism in Germany because of the bold SS runes on the dust jacket (rather than the letters SS) and the sympathetic nature of the brief text and photo captions.
In large part as a result of the publication of this book, the German government has forbidden the public display of SS runes, and no German in his right mind has since written anything objective about the Waffen-SS for publication in Germany.
The photographs were part of a SS war correspondent archive that was to have been destroyed early in 1945 but fortunately a set on contact prints (not the negatives) survived.
Anyone with an interest in the Waffen-SS should have a copy of Die Waffen SS - Ein Bild Dokumentation in their library. This example has the original dust jacket and is in very fine condition.
