This is a very interesting and practical antique hardcover book, a primer to help Americans and German immigrants in the United States to read, decipher and write German, including Sütterlinschrift. The Amerikanisch-Deutsche Fibel was published by the Teacher Conference of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod and published by Verlag des Northwestern Publishing House in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1903, no doubt using artwork that came directly from Germany. At that time, a great many people in American towns and cities with substantial Germanic populations studied German in school, heard it in church and spoke it at home every day.

This rare 119 year old hardcover Amerikanisch-Deutsche Fibel is in very nice used condition with the name of the original owner, Marian Struble, written in pencil on the front fly leaf. The spine is tight and the primer has no odor. The primer would be extremely helpful for researchers and collectors of Third Reich documents, Feldpost letters, and books!

The 5-½ x 8 inch, 76-page book starts out with pictures of animals, soldiers, furniture, hunters, tools, flowers, etc. to teach the sound of letters and combination of letters in the German language. This is followed by the letters of the alphabet written out in different fonts, capital letters, then whole words and sentences. There is a chapter on difficult letter combinations (ei-ie, for example), vowels and words with the Umlaut, rare adjectives, composite words, as well as material for church and school.
