As World War II ground on and German casualties mounted it became clear to officials in the Nazi government of the country that Landsers in the field needed all the inspiration they could get to go on fighting. Using a similar strategy to that found in the SS booklet Sieg der Waffen - Sieg des Kindes (Victory of Weapons - Victory of the Children), Wofür wir Kämpfen? explains in very direct terms who German soldiers were fighting and why. Germany certainly wasn’t the only country that needed to “sell” the concept of battling on year after year. In America a series of movies was actually marketed under the umbrella title “Why Do We Fight?”.
Wofür wir Kämpfen? is a 6-1/2 x 9 inch, 144 page, very, very heavily illustrated soft cover book published the Personnel Office of the German Army in January 1944 for Officers of the Wehrmacht at the direction of Adolf Hitler himself. It begins with a reprint of a 3-page directive on stationary of Der Führer dated Hauptquartier, den 8. Januar 1944.
The book explains how the huge country of Germany as it was constituted in the year 1648 was gradually reduced by foreign armies to a small, broken, financially defunct and powerless land in 1918. A 1943 map shows Germany in control of lands from the Arctic Circle to Africa and from the tip of Spain well into Russia.
Separated into chapters about the necessity for the battle Germany was waging, chapter 1 is Judentum or Jewry.
Other chapters are Bolshevism, England, America, and Development and Goals. Each chapter is very heavily anti-Jewish with specific lessons on the migrations of Jews since the beginning of time and a full-page map showing how the Allies intended to distribute German lands among Germany’s neighbors at the end of the war.
Since the book was printed in the very latter part of World War II, it was printed on the paper that was available. The result is that most examples of Wofür wir Kämpfen? found today are in very, very poor condition. This rare example is in very good condition with only five small pieces of scotch tape on the inside of the front cover and the outside of the back cover.
