ORIGINAL THIRD REICH WHW CHARITY CAMPAIGN MEMENTOES OR WINTERHILFSWERK ABZEICHEN
In Nazi Germany the Winterhilfswerk (Winter Charity Campaign or WHW) collection campaigns took place each winter and raised a great deal of money for charitable purposes. It was common practice for those who collected the contributions to give donors a small memento to show appreciation for their contribution, and by wearing the memento it was obvious the donor had contributed money.
Some WHW mementos are superb pieces of art, some printed booklets and others are very simple. Some include semiprecious stones and some are beautifully embroidered. All have been collected since the day they were made and are very much sought after today. Each lot is priced separately so be sure to order by lot number only. | WHW Lot 4d (above) - contains 5 WHW collectibles from June 1941 VDA charity collection called Wappen deutscher Grenzstädte. These plastic pieces all have the city Wappen or coat of arms of cities near German borders on them, or cities in German occupied territories. Each measures 1-1/2 inches tall, two pieces still have the original Third Reich strings attached. Condition exactly as shown. |

| WHW Lot 1736 (above) - 11 original metal, porcelain and lace WHW collectibles. The delicate round 2-layer lace piece in the lower left corner from February 1934 measures just under 2 inches. It still has its original pin, but the other lace piece does not. The round Schlageter Memorial pin , the Reichsmutterdienst and Frau und Mutter Abzeichen are quite rare nowadays, and still have their original pinbacks as do the other pieces Condition exactly as shown. |

| WHW Lot 6d (above) - the six original March 1940 Winterhilfswerk Glasabzeichen or glass badges measuring 1-1/4 inches in diameter. Each convex piece of glass had a relief of an animal impressed into the flat back side which was then either etched or sandblasted. The flat portion of the back was later lapped and polished. Each contains a different animal: a fish, a lizard, bee, ladybug, grasshopper or cricket. Each medallion has a small hole drilled at the top to accommodate a string. All of the glass pieces still have the original Third Reich string attached. Condition exactly as shown. |

| WHW Lot 3c (above) - contains 11 original WHW pressed and embossed chipboard pieces with hand-painted front sides. They measure about 1-1/2 inches in height and all have their original Third Reich strings still attached, except for the 1-1/2 inch round piece on the right side of the bottom row. The 2-1/4 inch tall heavy cardstock piece on the right hand side of the picture is dated 8 August 1942 and has a portrait photo of German movie star Albert Matterstock on the back. WHW Lot 51 (below) - contains 7 rare original Bernstein or amber flowers from a WHW collection in March 1939 (see advertising (left) from a rare issue of the National Socialist women's magazine NS Frauen-Warte), five still have their original string. They were created by the Staatliche Bernstein-Manufaktur (State Bernstein Manufacture) in Köningsberg in Prussia (now Kaliningrad). The 8th item is a small wooden flower shown in the bottom row which measures 15 mm in diameter.
| WHW Lot GAU BERLIN - contains EIGHT of the very rare Kunststoffabzeichen from the 1943 series Berliner Bauten or Berlin Buildings. The buildings in Berlin on these rare 40 mm round pieces are Adolf Hitler's New Reichschancellery (4), the War Academy (2), the Victory Column (7), State Opera (8), the Olympic Stadium (3), Brandenburg Gate (1), Deutsche Wache (6), and (5) der Runder Platz (intersection Potsdamer Strasse and North-South Axis - destroyed during an Allied bombing raid in 1943). There were originally 10 items in this 1943 WHW series and the only two of the 10 original Gau Berlin Berliner Bauten that are missing from this selection are City Hall and OKW Soldier Hall. |

| WHW Lot 1748 (above) - a lot of five Third Reich Abzeichen including the "Protect the Family" pin (left) with oak leaves from the 6 / 7 January 1934 WHW collection, the heart-shaped and flower pin (right) from the street collection of 31 October / 1 November 1936, the November 1935 Sonnenrad pin in the middle, as well as the WHW 1934/35 eagle pin in the middle. | WHW Lot 1739 has four Holzabzeichen or wooden WHW collectibles. Two have arms that do not move (from December 1939 WHW collections), the two rarer pieces on the left and right end of the photo above have arms that move and date from December 1940. The middle piece is ceramic and is just under 2 inches tall. Condition exactly as shown with original strings. |

WHW Lot 31C consists of five original Nazi era light metal WHW pins from February 1939 in the shape of animals. All these WHW Tierabzeichen still have their original colored 'eyes' which are actually set with prongs like in real jewelry, as does the flower pin in the lower left. The flower pin on the right is made of heavier metal and is 1-1/4 inches tall.
