This is a fine pair of original distinctive insignia (DI) of the Signal Company of the US 45th Division in the style used from 1924 to 1939. They are made of gold plated brass or copper with five colors of cloisonné and measure about 7/8 x 1-1/8 inches (23 x 30 mm). The red cloisonné swastika is 18 mm wide.

Most collectors know that the American 45th Division used the swastika on their insignia as it was an ancient American Indian symbol of good luck. The swastika symbol was discontinued after the National Socialist rise to power in Nazi Germany and replaced in 1939. In 1939 the Thunderbird design was officially approved by the War Department and authorized for manufacture and wear by the 45th Division. Virtually all US 45th Division material with swastikas was discarded by 1940 making this pair of two DIs very rare.
