ILLUSTRATED NAZI BOOK EXPLAINING THE SAAR REGION TO GERMAN YOUTH

Saar Dies Land ist Deutsch (Saar This Land is German) is the title of this book on the striking Nazi eagle and swastika cover, but the title page says Deutsche Buben! Deutsche Mädels! Kennt ihr das schöne Land an der Saar? which translates as “German Boys! German Girls! Do you know the Beautiful Land on the Saar [River]?”.

After forewords by Gauleiter Gustav Simon (shown right) and the leader of the Hitler Youth of Saarland, Oberbannführer Dillenburg, this 128 page softcover book has chapters titled “the Separated Land on the Saar”, “the German Land on the Saar”, “the Rich Land on the Saar”, “the Will of the People on the Saar”, as well as a chapter about what people in neutral foreign countries say about the Saar occupation.

There is also an excerpt of Adolf Hitler’s speech on 27 August 1933 about the return of the Saarland to Germany (die Rückkehr des Saargebietes zum Reiche), as well as the lyrics to the Saarlied.

Published by Friedrich Bohnenberger Verlag in 1934, this very graphic 89 year old 6-5/8 x 9-1/2 inch example of Saar Dies Land ist Deutsch is in very nice used condition with bright pages, a tight spine and no odor.

It is a Nazi book for German youths about the 738 square mile coal-mining Saar region written when it was still separated from Nazi Germany and occupied by France as a result of the Treaties of Versailles and St. Germain.

There are pictures of Adolf Hitler with children from the Saar visiting Berlin, streets in the Saar decorated with Nazi swastika flags, the open border between France and the Saar, historic buildings in Saarbrücken, the Vauban-designed fortress of Saarlouis, the famous Mettlach ceramic factory, simple factories and heavy industry in and outside Saarbrücken, Hermann Göring at a Nazi rally in Trier, Gustav Simon in his Nazi uniform, Dr. Joseph Goebbels and Joseph Bürckel during a Nazi rally in the city of Zweibrücken on 6 May 1934, HJ Oberbannführer Dillenburg, etc.

Saar Dies Land ist Deutsch was written by Dr. Jakob Szliska, a German World War I veteran and teacher born the the Saar province, who immediately joined the Nazi Party after the Saarland was returned to Nazi Germany in the 13 January 1935 Saar status referendum.

There are also several interesting pictures of marching exercises by French and British Bahnschutztruppen (railway protection troops - see picture above) and maps.
