A STEREOSCOPIC MAGAZINE
OF TIME AND SPACE - 1938

Over the years we have met a great many people with collections of Raumbild Verlag three-dimensional photo books produced during the Third Reich by Raumbild Verlag of Diessen am Ammersee, Germany. Those books covers subjects as varied as the Reichskriegertag in Kassel, the Luftwaffe book Fliegen and Siegen, Deutsche Plastik Unserer Zeit (German Sculpture of Our Time), the 1937 World’s Fair in Paris, Der Kampf im Westen (Combat in the West) and Danzig - Werden und Behauptung einer deutschen Stadt.

While those people were perfectly familiar with the books and the special metal viewer (Raumbildbetrachter) required for looking at the pictures, none of them were familiar with the 5-3/4 x 8-1/4 inch, 28 page, very heavily illustrated monthly magazine we offer here. This November 1938 issue of ,,Das Raumbild - Stereoskopische Magazin für Zeit und Raum’’ (The 3-D Picture - A Stereoscopic Magazine of Time and Space) was the 8th issue of the fourth year of publication.

The publisher was none other than Professor Heinrich Hoffmann, State Director of Photography in Munich.

This issue and apparently other issues as well contain actual Raumbild photographs tipped in on four unnumbered pages of heavy black stock. The text of the magazine explains all about the circumstances of the photograph and why it lends itself so well to 3-D photography. Among the 3D photos in this magazine are the March to the Feldherrnhalle on 9 November in remembrance of the one in 1923, Little Venice (Bamberg), Pfahlbau am Bodensee, Blüte des Eberwurz, Family Jumbo, the Kalibergwerk, an Aquarium in Paris, etc.

These are Raumbild magazine picture numbers 85 through 96 with two missing, number 94 and 96. Other than the two missing pictures, the rare nearly 70 year old magazine is complete and in very good condition. In over 40 years of looking, it is the only one we ever found.
