the role of the police in Nazi Germany - Your Friend and Helper
The name of the Nazi police magazine Der Deutsche Polizeibeamte was changed to Die Deutsche Polizei in 1938. The magazines are well illustrated and contain just the kind of news, scientific information, announcements and fraternal content that any Third Reich policeman could ask for and most articles are written by members of the Police or SS. Der Deutsche Polizeibeamte was the official bi-weekly magazine of the Fellowship League of German Police Officers and was published and printed in Berlin. After the name change in 1938 Die Deutsche Polizei was published at the direction of Reichsführer-SS and Chief of German Police in the Reichsministry of the Interior, Heinrich Himmler.

The big 64-page, 9-¼ x 12 inch Special Edition of Der Deutsche Polizeibeamte (The German Police Officer) dated 22 April 1936 was also a Werbenummer or advertising edition that was meant to be shared, according to the red message over-printed on the front cover. It starts with a foreword by Commander of the German Police, Kurt Daluege. Articles explain the role of the police in Nazi Germany (“Your Friend and Helper”), career opportunities in, for example, the neighborhood police and gendarmerie, the National Socialist battle against crime by the Kriminalpolizei, explaining capital offenses, behind the scenes at a Berlin police station, house break-ins, police and witnesses, the press and the police, fire prevention, prevention against hustlers, members of the German police as Olympic hopefuls and competitors, etc.

This 86 year old edition of Der Deutsche Polizeibeamte contains fine full-page Heinrich Hoffmann portraits of State and Prussian Minister of the Interior Dr. Frick (wearing his Blood Order), General der Flieger Hermann Göring, Generalleutnant Kurt Daluege, and Reichführer-SS Heinrich Himmler. Two other photo pages printed on glossy paper have smaller portraits of high-ranking police officials such as Staatssekretär (and SS-Brigadeführer) Ludwig Grauert, Ministerialdirigent Alfred Hall (Daluege’s adjutant), Ministerialdirigent Franz Bracht, Staatsminister Adolf Wagner, Staatsminister Dr. Fritsch, SS-Brigadeführer Pflaumer, etc.

The main article of the 42-page 20 September 1938 edition of Die Deutsche Polizei is about Reichsparteitag Großdeutschland and has many photos of the recent event including Adolf Hitler, Reichsführer-SS Himmler, SS Standarten review, Italian and Japanese Youth, General von Brauchitsch, Luftwaffe airplane and Army Panzerwagen exhibition events, the SS and Police parade attended by Hitler, Goering, Himmler and Hess, etc.

There is also a photo article about the NS-Kampfspiele (SS sport championship) and the desire of the ethnic German population in Sudetenland to become part of Hitler’s Nazi Germany. Traffic signs and the new uniforms of the Italian Carabinieri are shown, there are guidelines about writing a proper Will & Testament and information about pest control in agriculture and forestry. There is even a black bordered announcement about the death of a policeman who was shot and killed while trying to arrest a criminal in Landsberg in 2 September 1938. This Nachruf is over the name of Chef der Ordnungspolizei Daluege.
