An extremely high percentage (probably 99% or more) of the Kennkarte or Civilian Identity Document issued by the police in Nazi Germany were of the tear-resistant, once folded, gray "leinen" type (shown right) containing a front and back cover and two inside pages. That type of Kennkarte was replaced with a new 8-page version (shown left) when supplies of it ran out in some police offices late in the war. Most police offices never exhausted their supply of the old style document before the end of the war, so they never issued even a single example of the 8-page Kennkarte.

ORIGINAL NAZI KENNKARTE & POSTWAR ALLIED ID ISSUED TO
AN ETHNIC GERMAN WOMAN
FROM POLAND

The original owner of this Third Reich Kennkarte was an ethnic German woman named Philippine Eder (née Härter), born 16 August 1909 in Szczyglowka in Poland (west of Auschwitz and Katowice, very close to the Czech border). This Kennkarte number A00 4779 was issued to Eder in Amstetten on 27 May 1943 and was valid until 27 May 1948. She lived in Amstetten and worked as household help.

After the town of Amstetten was liberated by American Forces in 1945 it became part of Austria again. On 26 June 1945, Philippine Eder's postwar, Gendarmerie-issued Identity Card number 4075 was riveted to her Nazi ID. By that time Eder lived on Amerikanerstrasse 3 in the city of Enns (right across the Danube river from Mauthausen Concentration Camp) and her nationality is shown as Austrian. On the back panel of this 1945 Identitätsausweis is a stamp showing Eder was deloused (with DDT!) on 15 November
These original Nazi and postwar identity cards of Philippine Eder are
