JEWISH GHETTO AT LITZMANNSTADT
JEWISH GHETTO AT LITZMANNSTADT
This is a very rare Holocaust remnant from the Jewish ghetto in Litzmannstadt in the Generalgouvernement (German occupied Poland). The city of Lodz had been Litzmannstadt, Germany before the end of World War I and became Lodz when that part of Germany was awarded to Poland at the end of the war. The city of Lodz became Litzmannstadt again on 11 April 1940 and Jewish citizens of Poland's second largest city were confined to that part of the city designated exclusively as the Jewish ghetto. Hans Biebow of Bremen was in charge of the ghetto and put in place a Judenrat, or a group of Jewish elders in charge of Jewish self-rule within the ghetto. This Judenrat was also referred to as the Älteste der Juden in Litzmannstadt Getto.

German Marks and Polish Zlotys were no longer the official currency of the Jewish Ghetto in Litzmannstadt, but instead Gettogeld or ghetto money was used. These bills and coins were officially issued by the Aeltesten der Juden in Litzmannstadt-Getto, and the Jewish Elders of Litzmannstadt - Ghetto were also in charge of the Post or mail in the ghetto.

Offered for sale on this USMBOOKS web page is a very rare perfectly original 1-1/2 x 4 inch Einlieferungsschein or mailing receipt from the Postabteilung der Aeltesten der Juden in Litzmannstadt-Getto, the Judenrat postal system in Litzmannstadt-Getto, which was also referred to as Judenpost or Jewish Mail. It is receipt number 2285 that was issued on 26 August (year not mentioned) for something that was dropped off at the Standesamt or Registry Office in the ghetto.   Rare and absolutely original to the Third Reich period in Germany, condition as shown above.
$145.00 delivered in the USA.  Additional postage charges apply for foreign destinations.
Goldm
This one-sided 4-1/8 x 7-3/4 inch postcard was printed in Vienna in November 1945 and says: "I hereby publish notice that after a review of the local population registration records, my family name Goldberg has been corrected to Goldmann."
Clearly the Jewish sounding name Goldberg was not comfortable for the man even after the Nazi regime was no longer in power in Austria, so he sent out a notice that it had been changed to Goldmann! An unusual and historical piece of recent European history in very good condition.
