This original Third Reich presentation folio contains eight big full-color reproductions of original watercolors by Gustav Lüttgens of pictures that were also used to produce the beautiful tourist brochure for the Wagner Festival town of Bayreuth in the Bayrische Ostmark in 1938. MOST IMPORTANTLY, the set of prints actually contains an unused example of the Bayreuth brochure featuring smaller reproductions of the same Bayreuth watercolors as in the folio!
The 10-½ x 11-¾ inch presentation folio came from the office of the Lord Mayor of Bayreuth, Friedrich "Fritz" Kempfler. Besides the Gustav Lüttgens watercolor prints, the 7-¾ x 8-¼ inch, 26-page Nürnberg and Nordbayern Tourist Organization brochure also contains black & white photos of places of interest in Bayreuth (including the grave of Richard Wagner, the Wagner Memorial and his Haus Wahnfried as photographed by Gustav Lüttgens). There is also a Lüttgens photo of the Reichsautobahn in this brochure, which is significant as the city of Bayreuth had been officially linked up with Hitler's Nazi freeway system in 1937.
Bayreuth became the capital of Nazi Gau Bayerische Ostmark in 1933 and had an important place in Nazi history, and Adolf Hitler's heart, as it was the home of the annual Richard-Wagner-Festspiele, now called the Bayreuth Music Festival. During the Third Reich, the music festival was financed by the Nazi government and there are many photos of Hitler and other Nazi dignitaries with Winifried Wagner at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus. The photos right and below are shown for reference only.
The city was also an important tourist destination for the Kraft durch Freude (Strength through Joy) organization and their travel department for KdF members.
Bayreuth was also the home of the headquarters of the Nationalsozialistische Lehrerbund (National Socialist Teachers League or NSLB). The well-known Haus der Deutschen Erziehung (House of German Education, shown left in the Lüttgens watercolor below) with its "Honor Hall for the German Mother" was finished in 1936 and is the subject of one of the Lüttgens Aquarellen.
The beautiful Lüttgens watercolors show both the Bayreuth Festspielhaus and National Socialist House of Education in Bayreuth with swastika flags, the old city castle, Eremitage Palace Park, scenery and other sights. The brochure contains necessary information for visitors about climate, museums, festivities, sport and spa facilities, suggested walking routes through the city and day trips a short distance outside Bayreuth as well as a map of the inner city.
It is rare to find this original 1938 Bayreuth Oberbürgermeister presentation folio COMPLETE with all eight Gustav Lüttgens watercolor prints and the 'matching' 1938 tourist brochure together.
All pieces in this Third Reich lot are in very nice condition. No odor.
