| The first of these documents began life as a typical Third Reich Kriegsmarine (Navy) Soldbuch or Pay Book. When it was issued on 20 March 1942 to 34 year old Ships Engineer Georg Schwabe of Hamburg, the front cover and top of page one were overlabeled with the word Gebührnisbuch, probably to indicate that he was a civilian employee of the German Navy. |

| Schwabe worked for the Paris, France branch office of Kriegsmarine Base Wilhelmshaven and his Pay Book was issued there by Kriegsmarine Feldpost number 01099 B. Entries on page 26 show that Schwabe was trained in the use of the G98 rifle, the pistol and the hand grenade. |

The second document in this grouping is Schwabes very, very rare 4 x 5-3/4 inch Kriegsmarine Dienstausweis issued on 26 January 1942 and bearing the stamp of the Kriegsmarinewerft (Navy Wharf or Navy Yard) Wilhelmshaven Zweigstelle Paris and the signature of a Korvettenkapitän. At one time there was some sort of badge (probably a security badge) pinned through the front cover of the Gebührnisbuch, otherwise both pieces are in very good condition.
Very unusual original Kriegsmarine material from the collection of Ray & Josephine Cowdery, authors of the full-color Third Reich identity document guidebook, Papers Please! |
