RARE NAZI NAVY “CRUISE“ PHOTO ALBUM

Kriegsmarine Zerstörer Diether von Roeder
Kriegsmarine Nazi Eagle

PHOTO ALBUM
OF A SAILOR
ABOARD THE
KRIEGSMARINE
DESTROYER
,,DIETHER
VON ROEDER’’

This is an excellent photo album that was assembled by a German sailor on the Kriegsmarine war ship number 51, the ,,Diether von Roeder’’, during service in the North Sea, at the Arctic Circle and through the Atlantic Ocean to Spain.
On the first page there are photos of the U-Boot Memorial and the Kriegsmarine memorial near Laboe, above the city of Kiel. They are followed by photos of the ,,Diether von Roeder’’ at sea, in rough seas, in a dry dock and tied to a pier. There are photos of the bridge, of the ship on maneuvers and passing through locks.
KM ship ,,Diether von Roeder’’
There is a large 7 x 9-1/2 inch “portrait” of the ,,Diether von Roeder’’ at anchorage in Balholm harbor in Norway and running hard in the North Sea. Photographs show her firing a salvo, passing the Nord Fjord, firing small caliber guns, Norwegian Officers coming aboard, and as seen from her high mountain surroundings.

Still other photographs show the crew ashore, the boat on patrol observing fishing boats and the crew bringing fish aboard. The ,,Diether von Roeder’’ is seen virtually covered in ice.
Kriegsmarine Eagle
In other photos members of the crew are seen visiting Berlin and Hamburg. Returning to sea, they pass the KdF ship ,,Dr. Robert Ley’’ near Gibraltar. The ,,Diether von Roeder’’ stops in Spain where the crew sees the sights on shore leave, including marching Falangists and buildings that were damaged during the Spanish Civil War a few years earlier.
Kriegsmarine Matrosen
There are photographs of submarines and other ships, aircraft, and the crew of the ,,Diether von Roeder’’ firing both torpedoes and depth charges. The photographs show good times and the hard work in the life of a Matrose.

The 9 x 12-1/2 inch padded blue color album cover has a gold blocked rendering of the ,,Diether von Roeder’’ beneath a 3-1/4 inch gold metal Kriegsmarine eagle. The album contains 24 pages and about 200 pictures of which a very small part are related postcards.
Kriegsmarine flag and sailors
Most of the photos are sharp, clear, reproducible images of a known vessel in known circumstances. Many of the photos show the ship and its weapon systems in a combat ready “underway” situation.

There are only five photographs missing from the album and they were apparently postcard size personal portraits based on the notations on the pages. During his cruise the album assembler acquired a few small Norwegian and Spanish coins which he placed in glassine envelopes that he glued in the album. Those coins are long gone but the remains of the envelopes are still there.

The sailor that assembled this album was Matrose Gefreiter Karl Heinz Pomarius.

As a commendation his crew was awarded an escorted trip to Berlin as the “toast of the town”. An album covering that trip, and correspondence related to the sailor is offered separately on this website (click here to view the other album).

The parents of Karl Heinz Pomarius were told that their son had died for "Führer and Fatherland" on 21 November 1943, in a letter dated 15 December 1943 from one of his comrades.
This fine Third Reich Kriegsmarine photo album is
