Few people are aware that the publisher of the Heinrich Hoffmann photo book series of about 50 books even published a book in full-color. This is an excellent First Edition example of the rare 7-5/8 x 10-1/2 inch 64 page full-color soft cover book Nach den Glücklichen Inseln (To the Happy Islands) by Karl Busch with an introduction by Dr. Bodo Lafferentz, Reichsamtsleiter der NS-Gemeinschaft "Kraft durch Freude" as published by Zeitgeschichte Verlag in Berlin in 1940.

Subtitled "With the KdF Flag Ship Robert Ley to the Beautiful, Colorful World of Madeira and Tenerife" this rare book documents the cruise of German workers to a paradise of sub-tropical islands aboard a beautiful luxury steamship operated by the Nazi Party's community of "Strength Through Joy".

There are pictures of the "Robert Ley" being towed out of the German harbor, German working women and men relaxing in the sun on deck, food preparation being carried out in the ship's galley, the beautifully appointed dining room on the "Robert Ley", and scenes of the ship's passengers enjoying themselves on the Spanish islands of Madeira and Tenerife.

Among the fifty or so Hoffmann style photo books published by Zeitgeschichte Verlag Wilhelm Andermann during the Third Reich, this rare book is easily the most colorful, and the subject is superbly presented.
KdF ship Robert Ley was launched in March 1938, converted to a German hospital ship (Lazarettschiff B) during World War II, bombed by the British is was seized as war booty and scrapped in England in 1947.
