VIENNA EDITION OF
VÖLKISCHER BEOBACHTER
FOR HITLER’S BIRTHDAY
20 APRIL 1940
This is a rare and complete Völkischer Beobachter newspaper from 20 April 1940, the 51st birthday of Germany’s 23rd Chancellor, Adolf Hitler. It was Hitler’s first birthday after Germany went to war and thus the news in it is of particular interest to students of the Third Reich.
Der Führer
The newspaper measures 17-1/2 x 21 inches and consists of 14 pages in two separate sections. The Völkischer Beobachter was printed in separate editions in Germany’s three largest cities - Berlin, Wien (Vienna) and München (Munich) - and this is the Wien edition. Wien was the second largest city in Großdeutschland.

The front page consists entirely of a huge photograph of Chancellor Hitler in his military uniform delivering a speech before the Reichstag. The text on that page is largely thanks to “Mein Führer”. The greater part of the news in this paper is very positive war news and the articles about the character and greatness of Hitler.

Strip joint Achmed Beh Other news articles told Germans of American government spending in preparation for war, British warmongering, Narvik, WHW porcelain butterflies, the SA, HJ, etc.

The newspaper contains excellent ads for Mercedes Benz, Hitler Youth and Bund der deutsche Mädel clothing, Thonet chairs, Gillette razor blades, Auto-Union, Zipf beer, the casino in Baden, theaters, and many bars including the famous strip joint Achmed Beh.

EPHEMERA
The word “ephemera” refers to things that are typically expected to have a rather short life - the daily paper, an auction or advertising poster, and even a Christmas card are good examples of ephemera. This newspaper was printed over 60 years ago during the Third Reich on poor quality paper with a highly acidic wood pulp content. Through exposure to ordinary air, chemicals in the air began the process of destroying it. The yellowing or browning of old paper is a sure sign of that destruction process.

This newspaper has been very carefully dried and then laminated between two thin layers of plastic material that seal out air born contaminants like sulfur that could destroy the paper it is printed on. It can now be handled, examined, displayed, and even copied and it should still last for hundreds of years longer than it would if it was not laminated.
