| The crypt beneath the Orthodox cathedral St. Cyril and Methodius on Resslova Strasse in central Prag (Praha, Prague) is where the Czech commandos who mortally wounded Deputy Reichsprotektor Reinhard Heydrich were hidden until the Gestapo (Geheime Staatspolizei or Secret State Police) located Secret State Police) located them. The Czech commandos, Josef Gabcik and Jan Kubis, were trained as spies and assassins by the British Special Operations Executive (S.O.E.) in England and parachuted into Czechoslovakia late in 1941. On 27 May 1942 they tossed a large grenade against the side of SS-3, the open Mercedes-Benz automobile in which Heydrich was being driven to his office, inflicting wounds on the Nazi SS-Obergruppenführer that took his life in the early morning hours of 4 June 1942. |

| Joining other anti-Nazi Czech agents hiding from the Gestapo in the crypt beneath Orthodox cathedral St. Cyril and Methodius on Resslova Street, Gabcik and Kubis lived in relative safety until they were exposed by one of their own, Czech commando Karel Curda. Gestapo and Waffen-SS troops quickly surrounded the church and a fierce gun battle ensued.
At the end of the day Gabcik and Kubis saved their last bullets for themselves, committing suicide in the crypt beneath the church just prior to capture. |
