If you collect militaria or read history of the Nazi period and are not familiar with the german language Große Duden Bildwörterbuch (Big Duden Illustrated Dictionary) of the Third Reich era, here is the best one we have ever seen! The "Duden" concept was pioneered by the Bibliografisches Institut AG of Leipzig and took the form of heavily illustrated right hand pages with comprehensive definitions on the opposite left hand page. The book has six full-page, full-color plates.

The sort of information available only in an illustrated Duden makes it possible to find out the correct Third Reich German name for virtually any item. The illustrations on page 255 show all the items of equipment used in mountain climbing and make it possible to find out that those little metal pieces around the edges of the sole of Gebirgsjäger mountain climbing boots are called Flügelnagel. How else would you know?

The 75 year old Duden we offer here is a good example of the 5 x 7-1/4 inch, 796 page, 1938 edition containing thousands and thousands of individual illustrations like the ones shown here in our scans. This is the 12th New and Expanded Edition using the Normalschrift (Times Roman) alphabet instead of old fashioned German lettering. The Normalschrift is far easier for people in the 21st century to read than the old fashioned Third Reich German typeface.
