This is an original Third Reich Ausländer-Ausweis, a civilian identity document like a domestic German Kennkarte but for issue to foreigners working in Nazi Germany.

This example is very interesting for several different reasons; it is the very late style and was issued with only about nine months left in the war at a Luftwaffe air base, and the illiterate female owner could not even prove her national background.

Sophie Bitharie was born on 17 March 1897 in Athens but according to an entry in this Ausländer-Ausweis, she could not prove this (Nachweis fehlt). Bitharie was an unskilled laborer and she was illiterate - note she signed her ID with three XXX rather than a written name! She had light brown eyes, black hair and only 1.48 m tall (not even close to five feet!).

This Nazi ID was issued by the Commander of Fliegerhorst Markersdorf on 13 September 1944 and it was valid for one year. Fliegerhorst Markersdorf was a Luftwaffe air base where training took place for pilots and airplane mechanics, as well as for paratrooper jump training. Due to Allied bombing of the Wiener Neustadt Flugzeugwerke, production of the Me 109 was moved to Fliegerhorst Markersdorf during the war. A USAAF air raid on 8 July 1944 caused minimal damage, but the base was closed soon after an air raid on 1-2 April 1945.

This unique and rare 4 x 5-¾ inch, 8-page Nazi Ausländer-Ausweis has its original ID photo, and the correct stamps of the Fliegerhorst-Kommandeur 7/XVII Markersdorf on several pages. Complete and in good used condition, exactly as shown.
