Stille Winkel in Franken (Quiet Corners in Franken) is one of the lesser-known books of Leo Weismantel, a prolific German writer, poet and educator who wrote novels, biographies, plays, short stories and even a children’s book.

After seven pages of text by Weismantel, the striking black & white photos of beautiful, peaceful areas and scenes in Gau Franken are by Dr. Paul Wolff, a prominent German photographer and one of the first to adopt the Leica camera. Many people with an interest in the Third Reich are probably familiar with Wolff’s book “What I saw at the Olympic Games 1936”.

The photos in this book show typical Gau Franken half-timbered houses, churches, farmers, peaceful town and village life in and around places like Aschaffenburg, Würzburg, Wertheim am Main, Bamberg, Kulmbach, Sulzfeld, and Schweinfurth.

Julius Streicher was the Gauleiter of Franken, but this book focusses on the beauty of Franken, rather than political life in the Gau.
This is a 7 x 10 inch, 64-page Second Edition of Stille Winkel in Franken from 1934 published by Velhagen & Klasing of Bielefeld and Leipzig. The hardcover book has an embossed blue linen hardcover and comes with its original color dust jacket which shows wear. The book has no unpleasant odor.

Inside the front cover of the book we found a handwritten four-page letter that originated in Würzburg (located in the center of Gau Franken wine country on the Main river) and is dated 12 November 1938.
