As with so many of the public associations in Nazi Germany, the reasons for the existence of the Deutscher Radfahrer-Verband (DRV or German Bicyclist Association) were partly civil and partly military. On the military side, bicycles had been an important feature of military transportation in World War I and were expected to be again if another was occurred. Virtually everyone who had a bicycle became a member of the DRV and could be called upon to surrender his or hers for the defense of Germany.

On the civil side, the DRV was a social club that sponsored bicycling events throughout the country, and provided low cost accident, disability, and life insurance for its members. Like any auto club, they also provided maps, and certificates their members could use to cross foreign borders and to affiliate with members of similar foreign clubs. The DRV was headquartered at Dorotheenstrasse 11 in Berlin.

This original 3-3/8 x 5-3/8 inch, two-sided DRV membership ID number 62468 was issued to Wilhelm Rapp. He lived in Walddorf in Gau Württemberg and and this was his DRV membership ID for the year 1933/34. The back panel has membership and insurance information.

Very nice, little-used condition and absolutely original to the Third Reich period in Germany.
