GERMAN AMERICAN NAZI
AUSLANDS-ORGANISATION GAU TREFFEN MITTELWEST BADGE JULY 1938 |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| “Day Badges” (called ‘tinnies’ by some) are among the most collectible of all the pins and badges produced by Germany’s huge Abzeichen or insigne industry during the Third Reich of Adolf Hitler. Most were made in huge quantity and distributed very widely, so many examples of each style still exist. The badge offered here is far more rare because of its use in America. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| This is a DEUTSCHER VOLKSTAG badge from the GAUTREFFEN MITTELWEST held in CHICAGO, Illinois, USA on 24-25 July 1938 under the auspices of the AO, or Auslandsorganisation der NSDAP in Stuttgart. In plain English that means that the badge was made for participants who attended the AO sponsored Ethnic German Day Gathering in the Middle-West Region of America in Chicago late in July 1938.
The typical United States shields at the top and bottom of this badge are symbolic of America while the bursting swastika is the insignia of the “Germans Abroad” section of the Foreign Lands Gau of the Nazi Party in Stuttgart, Germany. There is no doubt whatsoever that this badge was manufactured in Germany by one of the large German tinny makers for the Auslandsorganisation who supplied it to their German-American Bund members in Chicago. |

| This rare German-American Day Badge measures about 2 inches tall by 1-3/8 inches wide (35 x 52 mm). It was made in an excellent steel die of light-weight, silver plated metal and was probably produced in relatively small quantity in anticipation of a somewhat limited turn-out for a Nazi Rally in the middle of America in the summer of 1938.
When the United States declared war on Germany in the winter of 1941, any American who still owned one of these Chicago Day Badges probably tossed it in the furnace or into the nearest garbage can. Very rare and in very good condition. |
